‘Stone Lantern Inside the West Gate, Naju’ was made in 1093, the 10th year of the reign of King Seonjong of Goryeo. Based on the writing on the stone lantern, this study is aimed to look into the historical meaning of the stone lantern. This stone lantern was set up under the native power including local headmen(hojang) Najaegyeon. They set a stone lantern at Heungryongsa temple in Jungheungri, Naju county and made an effort to show it, emphasizing the special connection between King Hyeojong, King Hyeongjon and Naju. They reminded the fact that a regional community in Naju and a leading force greatly contributed to the Goryeo Dynasty and hoped to enjoy riches and honors forever by justifying the peace of the loyal family, the country and the town. Their real intention to build a stone lantern was that they expected to escape from reality that showed signs of local community's decline, showing off Naju county and their existence. ‘Stone Lantern Inside the West Gate, Naju’ has a social meaning as it is a material to prove the presence of Na family who produced Hojang Najaegyeon and was the only native power leading Naju's local community. A major native power leading the regional community in Naju, Goryeo Dynasty changed over time. And such a flow, this stone lantern provides a clue to confirm the existence of the native power in the early Goryeo period which was unclear whether it existed or not. As the stone lantern confirmed the existence of Hojang Najaegyeon who was in the early Goryeo period when there was no material, it paved the way to figure out the only native power leading Naju's local community at that time. In terms of the preservation and the transmission of the material to look into trends into the regional community such as the change of the leading power, the social meaning of ‘Stone Lantern Inside the West Gate, Naju’ should be properly evaluated.
