Compare to the West, how creativity is understood and defined in non-Western cultures are little known. In order to uncover non-Western concept of creativity, this study explored diverse meanings of creativity across multiple non-Western cultural contexts. Those were Chinese, Indian, and Arab cultures. The purpose of this study was to investigate each culture’s understanding of creativity and to develop a culturally diverse and comprehensive understanding. This study suggested that creativity is differently perceived in each cultural context and their unique perceptions are closely related to their tradition of philosophy, intellectual tradition, methods of creating music, and musical cultures. In conclusion, creativity is not an independent concept existed out of social, cultural contexts, and the meaning has changed over time. Also, similar cultures partly share the perception of creativity in common. Lastly, the understanding of creativity is connected to how music is created in each culture.
