Globalization and the collapse of the male breadwinner model Accelerating globalization since the 2000s has constantly been changing people’s lifestyles. As forms of family and labor have transformed, people’s relationships, the norms that define these have altered as well. In turn, patriarchal norms that define gender relations are also being modified. The worst aspect of the changes wrought by globalization is the emergence of the extreme gap between the rich and the poor, which is said to represent a 20:80 society (Martin & Schumann, 1997). While this reflects disparate levels of income, it also serves as a line that divides the global North and South with the increasing gap between rich and poor, it is mostly women who are driven into poverty because of the male breadwinner model that has persisted from the past and the wage gap between men and women that has accompanied it. This is the site of globalization illustrated in the Handbook on Gender in Asia, edited by Shirlena Huang and Kanchana N. Ruwanpura. Against this backdrop, the editors point to the precarious types of labor women undertake, which illus trates the vulnerabilities and difficulties experienced by them as migrants, given the reality of an aging society and the need to address their own well-being in old age. The book is divided into five parts, each one comprising several chapters. Interestingly, Part 1 of the book covers the difficulties scholars face while doing field research in Asia and the problems of theory production through field studies. Parts 2, 3 and 4 focus on issues relating to Gender, Ageing and Health; Gender and Labour; and Gendered Migrations and Mobilities, respectively. The book then closes with the theme of “Gender at the Margin” as Part 5, which addresses concerns not covered in the preceding sections.
