Dionne Brand’s What We All Long For is a text attentive to the lived experience of colored and gendered characters in the city of Toronto. By focusing on their affective life, the novel reveals the precarious and marginalizing conditions that not only extrinsically but also intrinsically disparage their lives. Thus, a key focus of this paper is to analyze the protagonists’ struggle to navigate the nation’s implicit scripts of whiteness. The main characters, Tuyen, Carla, Oku, and Jackie engage in everyday modes of affective trouble that disorient and rupture affects aligned to a tacitly white nation. Working within the framework of Sara Ahmed and Michel de Certeau, I argue that the novel presents resistance or trouble as a form of affective politics, particularly in everyday aesthetic activities such as listening to music. Such a reading unearths larger implications of the protagonists’ mundane practices, as efforts that disrupt an internalized affective hierarchy of whiteness, prompting re-orientation and creating space which generates self-validation imperative to self-actualization.
