Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of frequency about the transient twinkle perception the variable refresh rate environment. Background: The TTP is a phenomenon human perceive a twinkle when the frequency of flickering is changed transiently. Even it should be considered as a factor when a quality of video in display is checked, the research was not developed as well. Method: A stimulus was flickering image between black and white with a specific contrast and it changes its frequency. At the moment of the changing frequency, participants can perceive the twinkle. In this study, the contrast threshold was measured by the two interval-forced choices task as an ability of perceiving twinkle. In experiment 1, the contrast threshold with different changes of the frequency was measured. In experiment 2, the condition of the frequency modulation was added, which is gradually modulated to the adjacent frequency with previous epoch. In experiment 3, the effect of the number of frames at transition period was investigated. Results: A change of frequency between first and second epoch decreases, the contrast threshold of detection twinkle increases. If the condition of frequency modulation added, the contrast threshold of detection twinkle significantly increases. As the effect of the number of frames at transition period, 1 frame has highest contrast threshold and 0 and 2 frames have the lowest contrast threshold. Conclusion: If the frequency of image changed to the adjacent frequency, the ability of detecting twinkle decreases. The condition which the frequency was modulated in the transition period make the detection TTP more difficult. 1 frame at transition phase is the most undetectable in the frequency modulation. Application: To reduce the TTP in the variable refresh rate environment at display, the frequency modulation with 1 frame at transition phase can be the best solution.
