After 1990s, discourse of East Asia prevailed Korean academic world. And the East Asian identity also was a hot issue. So-called “Hanzamunhwagwon(漢字文化圈)” was a theoretical basis of this discourse. Many books and papers written by Japanese scholars were introduced to Korea. Most of them assert that “kunyomi/kundoku(訓讀)” is a common intellectual basis in traditional East Asia. But this is not ture. There is a strong tradition of direct reading of Chinese language in Japan and Korea. The Unique way of reading Chinese in Japan, kunyomi/kundoku is different from Chinese, Korean way of reading. It is a kind of imperfect translation. It is inappopriate to call the Kunyomi/kundoku a common East Asian tradition. This paper explores the tradition of direct reading of Chinese in Japan. From the Edo Period, many Japanse scholars insisted that Japanese also use direct reading of Chinese lika Chinese and Korea. Ogyu Sorai, Dazai Shundai, Amenomori Hoshu, Shigeno Yasutsugu, Aoki Masaru, Kuraishi Takeshiro were reperesentives of that tradtion. Their claims were right. However, there is a political backgraound in kunyomi/kundoku. Mdoern Japan’s nationalism and Emperor system. This paper researches these persons and the political background of Chinese reading in Japan
