Training and Contents of Clinical Buddhist Chaplain in TaiwanJeongyeon Yang Abstract: This article aims to study the contents and characteristics of training for Clinical Buddhist Chaplain in Taiwan in order to review Buddhist practice activities. For the purpose of this study, this article examined the activities of the representative organizations, Buddhist Lotus Hospice Care Foundation and Dabei Xueyuan, which train Clinical Buddhist Chaplain in Taiwan, and then examined the curriculum for educating them. Hospice activities in Taiwan were mainly centered on the ideology of Western Christianity, but since the 1990s, Taiwanese Buddhist communities have felt the need for spiritual care activities based on their own situation and culture, and started to train Clinical Buddhist Chaplains. The education for cultivating them is based on medical knowledge and Buddhist view on life and death, and it focuses on developing the capacity to promote hospice and death education activities in connection with hospitals. The education and activities for the ‘localized’ spiritual care in Taiwan can provide greater direction for our Buddhist communities to seek to train Buddhist hospice experts. Key Words: Clinical Buddhist Chaplain, Buddhist Practice Activity, Spiritual Care, Hospice, Clinical Buddhism
