The success of Germany’s economic and social policy has brought ordoliberalism additional attention in recent years, as many have wondered what role the economic ideology played in the country’s recovery even during a period of crisis. However, in the Anglo-Saxon realm, the ordoliberal tradition was long disregarded. It was viewed as neoliberalism’s insignificant little sister, or at most, a peculiarly German quirk. This has somewhat changed in more recent times, as a result of three quite distinct changes. One of them is that more and more younger German ordoliberal scholars are moving into the international scene, engaging in debate and publishing their work in English. These works add to and deepen the ordoliberal tradition’s body of knowledge.
The creators of the economic theory intended for ordoliberalism to be operational and practical. Finding ordoliberalism’s practical applicability in secular policy domains, however, requires unusual and laborious effort. There are hardly any comparative studies that deal with German economic policy. It is essential to contrast German institutions with their Anglo-American counterparts (i.e. Type III and V studies) on the topics in order to emphasize the nuanced characteristics of German economic institutions founded in ordoliberalism. Ordoliberalism must serve as the foundation for German studies, and both theoretical and practical discourses must coexist.
