This article opposes to the common belief that the Shortcut approach is regarded by Chinul as superior to the Waking and Quelling Sam?hit? approach. Chinul’s biographical inscription by an officer Kun-su Kim presents the so-called ‘three approaches’ composed of the Waking and Quelling Sam?hit? approach, the Complete and Sudden Adhimukti approach, and the Shortcut approach, which have been seen by the most important researchers as the best illustration of his whole thought, with a few exceptions of course. After examining those opinions that reject the three approaches in total or some parts of them, I was able to confirm that their arguments have some intrinsic and extrinsic flaws. And then I introduced other views which especially concentrate on Excerpts from the Dharma Collection and Special Practice Record with Personal Notes, the optimal target for our discussion and still insist on the common belief in question. I specified the crucial passages seemingly in support of their positions and came up with my own alternative reading of them. I went even further by conjecturing and refuting other possible reasons in favor of the conventional understanding.
