This study re-examined a series of mass racial assaults against Chōsen gakkō students by Japanese students that took place between the mid-1960s and 1970. Furthermore, this study investigated the multi-layeredness of racism contained in these assaults, and to clarify the limitations of the solutions. In recent years, general and academic interest in ‘Anti-Korea demonstrations’ in Japan has spread, and it is necessary to connect them with the wider evolution and history of racism in Japan. The existing approach has defined and treated the Chōsen gakkō assaults as organized racist violence based on the ideology promoted by anti-communists. However, beyond the validity of this interpretation, this study has attempted to highlight Japanese racism as a “coexistance of multiple extremely conflicting meanings”(Michel Wieviorka, 1998) through a consideration of points not reflected in the macroscopic analysis. This study discussed not only the effects of racist violence but also the ‘racism spectacle’ that arbitrarily unfolded in the public arena. It also highlighted the ‘systemic racism’ of the police who treated the case as a public security issue and offered unspoken support through their inaction. This study further discussed the unacknowledged racism of civil society. For example the response of the Chōsen gakkō students was labelled as ‘counter-violence’, which led to the students not being treated solely as victims. Additionlly the limitations of the solutions offered by teachers to overcome conflict between Korean and Japanese students, including historical education and exchange meetings were also presented. This study has limitations which will hopefully be addressed by future qualitative studies examining the perspectives of the authorities or perpetrators.
