토지개혁은 수천 년 동안 지속된 개인 토지 소유 제도를 폐지하면서 국가가 최대 지주가 되었다. 개혁개방 이후, 중국 정부는 토지 소유권의 혜택을 톡톡히 보고 있다. 이렇게 축적된 자본은 민생을 위한 투자로 환원되어야 하지만, 백성들은 오히려 국가와 관료들로부터 이중삼중의 약탈을 당하고 있는 것을 소설 속에서 알 수 있다. 본 연구는 통시적인 시각으로 소설 팡팡의 《연매》와 류전윈의 《방관시대의 사람들》에 나타나는 토지개혁과 개혁개방 시기 인간성의 변화를 살펴보았다. 《연매》에서 토지개혁 시기 ‘지주’들은 1세대 저항, 2세대 정체성 억압을 거쳐 3세대에 이르러서는 비극적인 가족사를 ‘연매’하고 안일한 삶을 선택하고자 한다. ‘이 세상에 진실은 없다’고 스스로를 위로하는 ‘지주’ 3세 칭린의 나약하고, 두려움을 느끼는 모습에서 중국 국가 권력의 위엄과 시민사회의 부재를 느낄 수 있다. 《방관시대의 사람들》에서는 개혁개방이라는 화려한 허울 속에 은폐된 중국 관료 자본주의의 민낯을 보여주고 있다. 권력층의 욕망은 부정부패를 넘어 약탈과 억압이 빈번히 발생 되고, 분권화 되어 지방 마피아를 양산하고 있다. 지방 마피아는 서민들의 삶을 위협하기 때문에 정권에 대한 불신을 촉발하고, 누적되면 정권의 존속을 위협할 수 있다. 관료들의 약탈로 가난에 내몰린 하층민들은 사기와 성매매로 자신들의 생존을 유지하고자 했다. 요컨대, ‘경자유기전’을 표방한 토지개혁과 ‘중국몽’을 외친 개혁개방은, 국가 권력이 인민에게 토지와 자본으로 베풀어 주는듯한 허상을 투입하였고, 인간성은 그로 인해 서로를 해치고 자신을 망가뜨리는 방향으로 변질하였지만, 토지와 자본은 결국 모두 국가에게로 귀속된 결과를 가져왔다.

The land reform abolished the private land ownership system that had lasted for thousands of years, making the country the largest landlord. After reform and opening up, the Chinese government is reaping the benefits of land ownership. The accumulated capital had to be returned as an investment for the livelihood of the people. However, in the novel, we can see that the people are suffering from massive looting from the state and bureaucrats. This study observed the novel Pang Pang's soft burial and Ryu Jeonwin's People in the age of bystanders from a diachronic perspective. Changes in humanity during land reform and reform and opening in this novel were considered. In soft burial, during the land reform period, ‘landlords’ go through first-generation resistance and second-generation identity repression. In the third generation, they want to bury their tragic family history like a novel 'soft burial' and choose an easy life. The majesty of the Chinese state power and the absence of civil society can be felt in the weak and fearful figure of the third-generation Qinglin, a 'landlord' who comforts himself by saying 'there is no truth in this world'. People in the age of bystanders shows the true face of Chinese bureaucratic capitalism hidden in the glamorous façade of reform and opening up. The desires of those in power go beyond corruption, looting and oppression frequently occur, and they are decentralized, producing local mafia. The local mafia sparks distrust of the government because it threatens the lives of the people. If this accumulates, the existence of political power may be threatened. The lower classes, driven into poverty by the looting of the bureaucrats, tried to maintain their survival through fraud or prostitution. In simple terms, land reform that advocated “only the peasants own land for farming” and reform and opening-up that called for the “Chinese dream” seemed to give land and capital to the people by the state power. As a result, human nature has changed in a way that harms each other and destroys itself, but land and capital eventually all belonged to the state.
