This study analyzes the effect of economic fluctuations on patent applications considering that there are few studies on the effect of economic growth on patent applications. As an analysis model, the time series regression analysis model between patent applications-R&D-GDP proposed by Hingley & Park (2017) was applied. To this end, the analysis data were used Intellectual Property Statistics (1947~2020) released by the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Research and Development Activity Survey (1976-2019) released by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Real GDP (1953-2020) among national accounts released by the Bank of Korea. As a result of the analysis, the following three points could be confirmed First, Korean patent applications have pro-cyclic characteristics. Second, the current patent application was affected by past patent applications. Third, the current patent application had a strong effect on the R&D activities two years ago. These suggest that the continued increase in the number of patent applications in Korea despite the recent economic downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic is a combination of expectations for an economic rise, patent application inertia, and recent increase in R&D investment.
