This essay compares and contrasts Professor James Moriarty in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Final Problem” and Jim Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock, focusing on the ways in which they respectively undo or deconstruct the existence of Doyle’s Holmes and the BBC’s Sherlock. Drawing on Roland Barthes’s distinction between Work and Text, the essay contends that, while Doyle’s failure to take Holmes out of the realm of Work through Professor Moriarty attests to the power of characters to challenge the author’s authorship/authority, Jim Moriarty’s failure to cancel out the existence of Sherlock through the exposure and performance of the (inter)textuality of their existence illustrates the show’s investment in reinforcing its own status as Work. The different ways in which Professor Moriarty and Jim Moriarty call into question and thereby reaffirm the existential status of Holmes and Sherlock are closely interwoven with the values that pervade the worlds depicted in each text. Holmes, as a hero of the new era of science and technology, manages to survive the author’s attempt to kill him through a character with equal intellectual powers with the help of readers willing to overlook the absurd premise that one single person can restore or destroy the order of the entire society. On the other hand, Sherlock emphasizes the process by which Sherlock differentiates himself not only from Jim Moriarty but also from Doyle’s Sherlock, demonstrating its urge to move away from postmodern features that define the digital era and to preserve what is uniquely human.
