With more than 2.5 million foreigners living in Korea, the ratio of foreigners to the total Korean population is approaching 5%. Accordingly, Korea is rapidly transforming from a nation-state into a multicultural society. Consequently, it is timely to reflect on multicultural education that has been targeted at minorities in the past and establish multicultural education for all.
In order to provide multicultural education for all, it would be desirable to utilize museums as part of the cultural infrastructure. Museum relics collected from various cultures inherently possess multicultural characteristics, and practical education that incorporates relics enables self-directed learning and integrated education. In addition, museums used as a place for lifelong education and a space for communication that forms local communities can develop as an arena for culture and arts education for members of the multicultural society.
Critical multicultural education goes beyond providing multicultural students with equal educational opportunities and room for social adaptation by encouraging students to critically view their multicultural experiences, which leads to practical actions. Thus, museums should aim to provide critical multicultural education.
The aim of this study is to analyze multicultural education programs in museums and art galleries based on Bank’s approach to multicultural education and devise a critical multicultural education program for the Gimhae National Museum based on the characteristics of the multicultural society in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do.
The program includes both migrants and citizens, where migrants participate from the production stages of the program. The purpose of the program is to allow participants who live in a multicultural society to critically assess the prejudice and bias they naturally exhibit when learning about cultures of various groups in society and to seek solutions to such social problems. Consequently, the aim of the program is to develop multicultural education that can share the values of cultural diversity and cultivate multicultural capabilities.
