As citizens" cultural consciousness increases, new forms and expressions are required to be used in the form of architecture, which is expressed as the epidermis of architecture. In addition, although the definition of surface has been dealt with several in each previous study, definitions of sub-concepts such as skin and facade other than surface have not been clearly classified. Therefore, this study aims to proceed with the definition classification of surface and sub-concepts, and to find areas that can be developed in the future by analyzing the effect of surface on modern society. The research method is as follows. A 7-point scale survey is conducted based on keywords obtained through previous research papers. The survey results are placed on the positioning map to derive the core results of this study. 1) Architects before modern times approached epidermis as a physical concept. 2) Since modern times, the approach to surface with abstract concepts has increased, and the desire for new expression methods has increased. 3) These architectural surface play a role closer to function than decoration in modern times. 4) The role of the current surface cannot be ignored for architectural changes in the past, but it has been confirmed that a new approach to decorative roles different from before is needed.
