In December 986, Li Ji Qian of Xi Xia proposed to Khitan. and in March 989 he married Princess Yi Cheng. This marriage had a satisfactory result for both sides. and has had a major impact on international relations in Northeast Asia. First, the relationship between Xi Xia and Khitan became closer. Li Ji Qian"s political power was strengthened, and Khitan had the effect of relieving military pressure by North Song Dynasty. Second, In the relationship between Xi Xia and Song, Li Ji Qian surrendered to North Song and also carried out military attacks. Song tried to restore the Yan Yun province from Khitan, but had to disperse the deployment of military force.
Third, in the relationship between Goryeo and Khitan, Song sent an envoy to Goryeo in 985 and 994, Goryeo offered to collaborate with North Song, but North Song refused, so Goryeo break off diplomatic relations with North Song. Later, Goryeo tried to improve relations with Khitan and gained practical benefits in expanding its territory in the north. Fourth, in terms of the relationship between the North Song and Khitan, Khitan continued to attack the North after fears of a joint attack of Goryeo-Song was dissipated, and eventually signed “The Vow Of he Chan-yuan” in 1004. The friendly relations between Li Ji Qian and Princess Yi Cheng played an important role in shaping these international relations.
