After the period of martial law in Taiwan, the Hakka group experienced the revival of their mother tongue, and actively established a Hakka TV station to promote cultural dissemination of the Hakka group. Lee Chiao actively participated in the reshaping of Taiwan’s history and culture, such as hosting the TV program “Literary Play - Literary Talk Theater”. He Introduced the works of Taiwanese literary writers, and also hosted the “Hakka Weekly” to introduce the rich humanistic connotations of Hakka. In 2002, Public Television adapted his novel into the “Wintry Night”and “Wintry NightⅡ”. In 2008, the film “1895” was adapted from Li Qiao’s script “Love to the Earth”, and directed by Hong Zhiyu, subsidized by the Hakka Committee, with Hakka pronunciation. Through the cross-domain adaptation of audio-visual media, from a post-colonial point of view, the knowledge of Cultural Hakka and Linguistic Hakka is reconstructed, and the tradition is re-created and reproduced, so as to reacquaint what we know about the Hakka group culture today. Criticism of post-colonial theory focuses on the analysis of imperialist cultural aggression, the relationship between the suzerain state and the colony, the cultural role and political participation of elite intellectuals in the Third World, and concerns the expression of the “other” by ethnic groups, cultures, and history. This thesis intends to re-explore how to reconstruct the language, history and identity of the Hakka ethnic group through Lee Chiao “Wintry Night Trilogy”, and it’s mixed language writing and re-creation of hybrid text presents the meaning of colonization, as well as the adaptation of film and television. Arguments on fiction/historical facts, fusion/essence, etc. involved in the formation and reconstruction of identity are revisited and explored.
