Existing critiques of Henry VI Part 1 have long remained in the realm of dichotomization. The focus of the previous critiques has been on reinforcement of the hegemonic discourse in Henry VI Part 1 represented through the foil relationship of Talbot and Joan La Pucelle. In these studies, Pucelle, as a female warrior of France who has a plebian origin, is interpreted as the antipodal opposition of Talbot who is a noble male hero of England. Even a series of feminist studies on Pucelle has been made on the basis of this relationship. The dichotomization often recognizes Pucelle as “other” in terms of gender, nationality and classicism that inevitably supports the solidarity of the binarized world. This paper recognizes this limitation as the consequence of analyzing the play and characters within the rigid frame of realism and realistic reproduction of history. Therefore, this paper intends to shed light on fantastical and creative elements in Henry VI Part 1 that deconstructs the idea of historical play as a realistic reconstruction of historical records, and analyze the way Pucelle is dramatized as a fictional character involving fantastical elements. Moreover, the paper aims to reinterpret Talbot-Pucelle relationship as a double so that the previous interpretation that reinforces dichotomous relationship between Talbot and Pucelle—self and other—can be disrupted. Through paying attention to creative dramatization of history in Henry VI Part 1, it would be possible to examine how “other’s history” can be significantly placed and recognized throughout history plays of Shakespeare.
