This study focuses on the cases of dealing with women within the North Korean system among novels written by female North Korean defectors. North Korean women who bear the double burden of labor as traditional women and workers, are even responsible for the survival of their families after the severe economic crisis in the mid-1990s. The novels of female North Korean defectors show the daily life of North Korean women in details which is difficult to access, and depict female subjects who reveal contradictions and cracks in the forced gender regime, symbolized by ‘diligence’. First, this study looks at novels featuring mothers who tried to devote themselves to taking care of their families as required by the system. In the end, they reveal contradictions of giving up their lives to save their families who are on the verge of starvation or abandoning their system and choosing to defect from the North. Next, This study looks at novels dealing with female characters who actively participate in private economic activities. They break the gender regime and create cracks as people who want to accumulate capital based on their desires and free will, not just to make ends meet. But they appropriate the ruling system and rather survive in it to the end. As such, the novels of female North Korean defectors are very meaningful in that they can grasp the present of North Korean women reconstructed by their desire for change.
