Kim, Yu-kyung’s Youth Sonata narrates the migration within the East Asian region and the process of settlement in South Korean society of North Korean refugee women, showing that it works through demarcation of political boundaries and overlapping economic boundaries. Political boundaries are visualized as national borders as a unit, demonstrating the division of citizens/non-citizens and the mechanism of inclusion/exclusion of bio-politics. However, it is economic boundaries that have a more profound effect on the migration and settlement process of North Korean refugee women. Due to the globalization of capital and the neoliberal market economy order, the East Asian region is heterogeneously integrated. The movement for survival of North Korean refugee women appeared as an act of self-renewal as an economic human within this overlapping capitalist space. Kim, Yu-kyung’s Youth Sonata confirms that the political and economic boundaries faced by North Korean refugee women and the process of transcending those boundaries are reshaping the conditions of human life under the post-Cold War-neoliberal regime. In this respect, the continuous process of border crossings of North Korean defectors as cross-borders appearing in North Korean defector literature proves that these boundaries are in an unstable state where they constantly self-proliferate. The boundaries surrounding/penetrating Korean society strengthen their boundaries through heterogeneous existence outside the boundaries, but at the same time are questioned by such entities.
