After the end of the ‘Cultural Revolution’, China suffered a significant ideological shock, which continues to this day. In the context of such an ideological crisis, the most remarkable thing is the revival of ‘confucianism’. As is well known, at the beginning of the 20th century, ‘confucianism’ was downgraded to a product of the ‘old age’ by Chinese intellectuals, and ‘confucianism’ was the subject of criticism and abolition throughout the 20th century. However, in today’s 21st century China, interest in ‘confucianism’ is increasing, and in this trend, how to re-examine the relationship between ’socialism’ and ‘confucianism’ has emerged as a very sharp topic. This paper summarizes how Chinese intellectuals view the relationship between ‘confucianism’ and ‘socialism’ through a discussion held under the title of ‘confucianism and socialism’ in the magazine ‘Open Times’. Afterwards, through a theoretical review, the theoretical issues that build the relationship between ‘confucianism’ and ‘socialism’ are critically reviewed in terms of the relationship between ‘polity’ and ‘identity’.
