Economists, government policy makers and all economic agents always analyze and predict the current and future economic conditions and then investors will make an investment plan and policy makers will establish a timely economic policy.
To predict the future economic condition, analysis of the present must be preceded. However, there are few indicators that actually help to judge the current or near past economic situation.
Since most of monthly economic indicators of real economy, for example production, consumption and investment, have a substantial time lag, there is a great limit for economic agents to know how the current economic condition is.
To address there issues, this study aims to provide indicators which have explanatory and predictive power for economic conditions and are available more quickly than monthly economic indicators.
To do this end, we use 1) electricity sales, 2) latent factors extracted from recently developed regime switching model and 3) news data to develop quickly available indicators and find the usefulness of these indicators for Nowcasting.
Suggested indicators in this study are expected to enable us to assess the current economy before monthly indicators are announced. And they are more powerful and helpful in a period when the economy is very unstable like the COVID-19 pandemic.
