In this study we investigate the phenomenon of industrial restructuring, exploring its root causes and analyzing the way it actually unfolds in the economy, focusing on the Korean manufacturing sector. In addition we empirically analyze the impact of each economic driver on industrial restructuring pressure by differentiating the driving forces of economic growth, international competitiveness or the international division of labor.
In the second chapter we examine the concept of industrial structuring pressure and describe the methodology employed in the study. Here we define industrial restructuring pressure and probe its conceptual framework, outlining the major issues in play and presenting this study’s distinguishing contributions to the literature.
The third chapter comprises an exploration of the industrial restructuring phenomeonon using the Korean case as the principal analytical subject. Here we aim to grasp to the nature of industrial restructuring phenomena at both at the sectoral and corporate levels as well as from the perspective of integrated industry-enterprise phenomena.
The fourth chapter deals with how the factors motivating economic growth trigger industrial restructuring and analyzes the impact of each driver of economic growth on industrial restructuring. The specific economic growth factors analyzed include long-term productivity, technological innovation, the supply of labor, foreign direct investment.
In the fifth chapter we investigate how factors influencing changes in international competitiveness and the international division of labor prompt industrial restructuring and analyze the effects those factors have on industrial restructuring. Factors subject to the analysis of the international division of labor include labor productivity, the structure of national comparative advantage, global value chains, free trade agreements.
The sixth and final chapter of the study assimilates the research findings and describes the implications they carry, and designs the strategies to respond to industrial restructuring pressure and policies for industrial restructuring in general.
