Semantic frames and semantic domains are attributes evoked by a construction during the mapping process in the interpretation of metaphorical constructions. This paper investigates how the two are utilised in the interpretation of Kiswahili metaphorical constructions where constructions are specified as autonomous and dependent. The paper further makes an account of how Cognitive Grammar Theory (Langacker 1987) and Construction Grammar Theory (Goldberg 1995) remedy the weaknesses of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980) in the interpretation of metaphorical constructions. In so doing, data for analysis is sourced from three Kiswahili literary plays; Natala (Mberia, (2011), Maua Kwenye Jua la Asubuhi (Mberia, 2004), and Kijiba cha Moyo (Arege, 2009). The paper further draws upon the insights of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980), Cognitive Grammar Theory (Langacker 1987), and Construction Grammar Theory (Goldberg 1995) in the analysis of data. The paper establishes that the human mind is able to give meaning to a construction by relating an utterance with the frame it evokes, that is through semantic frames or semantic domains as has been established in this paper.
