This paper explores Fu Ping’s self-identity as a woman recognized through the spatial experience of Shanghai in Wang Anyi’s novel Fu Ping. Wang Anyi identifies Shanghai as a space for individuals. Shanghai is a space where each individual experiences and unfolds his or her daily life in their own way. Therefore in reading Fu Ping, readers cannot capture the details with the novel without focusing on the emotions and experiences of space practiced by Fu Ping. The emotional change of Fu Ping experienced through the Huaihai Road, the Zhabei shantytown area near Suzhou River, and Meijiaqiao, one cannot fully analyze the motivation for Fu Ping to eventually turn to Meijaqiao. Therefore, based on the existing research, this paper examines the process of Fu Ping forming its own identity around the space Shanghai. Fu Ping can be understood as a process in which Fu Ping, a girl from Yangzhou, seeks and grows her own identity. From this point of view, Shanghai’s place, which appears in Fu Ping, is not an objective space as a coordinate or territory in space, but a place where boundaries are established and defined under close relationship with social and spatial practice. In other words, Fu Ping’s urban experience contributes to waking up to her identity as a woman. From this point of view, this paper attempts to understand how Shanghai as a physical and social space contributes to Fu Ping’s identity as a woman, and how it leads to Fu Ping’s subjectivity.
