Wang An-I is the writer who experiences the Cultural Revolution. her works have peripheral characteristics, which is shown in her creation attitude to be distant from major stream of contemporary novel. During the Cultural Revolution while people talk about the Loss in the literary stream of lesion and retrospection, she searched for Harvest that can be probable in such a disaster. While the major theme of Chinese Culture in 1980s were the realization of Individual Subject, she described the process of searching for Self of the alienated from the society in her works. They could not realize their selves in her works.
Gender consciousness and her position for this attracted attention of the Feministic critics. From One-one series in early 1980s up to Janghanga in 1990s, she showed her conspicuous feministic view through anti-cultural description in her works.
Since late 1980s, Shanghai became a new target for the literature as if it were recovered from the long covered years. She had worked in Production Corps for 10 years in countryside and then came back to Shanghai. She felt alienated in Shanghai after 10 years absence. Such a feeling of heterogeneity made she search for the relation between Shanghai in she imagination and that in the reality. Therefore she developed historical changes and cultural inclusive meaning through various works.
In this article, Wang An-I in contemporary Chinese Culture, Wang An-I and Shanghai, and overthrowing description in Story of a Uncle will be discussed.
