The understanding of egoism (ahaṅkāra) is a powerful instrument to understand one"s behaviour and the behaviour of others. Vedic philosophy tells us that when a person has an egoistic mind then he is in a state of illusion and this egoism (ahaṅkāra) is the cause of all suffering. The thoughts and feelings of my-ness (mamatva) have been reported as a problem because they give rise to desires or wants, greed or self-indulgence, and other mental impurities. When these cognitions and patterns of behaviour of egoist individuals are challenged, then they experience internal dissonance, which results in a self-defeating and psychologically uncomfortable mental state. What must one do to get rid of this problematic self-defeating cognition? To answer this question, it may be said that it is possible by a person only after renouncing the vices like egoism and affection, and by attaining his blissful nature. The path of devotion (Bhakti-Marg), which is the path of love and devotion to God and self-realization, plays an important role in this transformation and is allows for the blissful celebration of life.
