The Vietnamese Hmong have developed their own clothing culture, and their creativity is well expressed, especially in terms of decoration. Despite the unique decorative characteristics of Vietnamese Hmong clothing, research on it is insufficient, so there is a need for specific research on the decorative aspects expressed in Vietnamese Hmong costumes. This study aims to provide essential information on ethnic costumes by focusing on the decorative trimming of Vietnamese Hmong costumes, examining the expression types and characteristics, and understanding the aesthetic effects. In Vietnam"s Hmong clothing, indigo-batik dyeing is used as the primary fabric for flax produced in the highlands, and various symbolic patterns of the tribe are decorated on it. The trimming decoration types and characteristics appearing in Vietnamese Hmong costumes are summarized. First, the traditional tribal symbolic patterns are decorated with various trimmings through the indigo dyeing process of the batik technique. Second, the batik pattern is emphasized. The handicraft decoration effect is maximized by using threads of different colors and thicknesses on the fabric dyed with indigo and trimming them with colorful embroidery. Third, it expresses the harmony of various patterns and colors by trimming the patchwork that cuts and attaches the fabric thinly and embroidery trimming. Fourth, attach beads or metals directly to clothes or trim them with accessories to add decorativeness to clothes. The following four aesthetic effects are inferred from the decorative expression of Vietnamese Hmong clothing. First, while maintaining the traditionality of clothing, the originality of the tribe is expressed through decoration, resulting in a simultaneous effect of a complex expression. Second, the Hmong costumes show the abstract effect of developing the symbolic meaning of religion and culture handed down to them into various geometric decorations. Third, the relief effect of the sense of volume on the garment"s surface appears from the texture combined with various embroidery trimmings and fabric patchwork trimmings. Finally, an integrated effect of complex reorganization of various colors and materials appears.
