The two-dimensional culture of China, which has been influenced heavily by Japanese ‘Otaku’ culture, has been suggested to be linked to patriotism in recent years. This research have analyzed the representative web animation The Rabbit, That Year & those Things in order to examine the connection between sub-culture and mainstream culture, the nation and fandoms. This attempt has shown that there may be connection and interaction found both in the aspects of narrative and platform.
Narrative analysis has led us to the discovery of the characteristics of propaganda in content and two-dimensionalization in images. ‘Barrage’ sharing sites of typical two-dimensional videos allow active interaction of participants, and develop the two-dimensional characteristics of collectivity. As a result of such interaction, individuals and their nation become more integrated through the characters of the works, thereby unconscious imaginary community being formed, and heightened patriotism being naturally followed.
This paper has focused on analyzing just one of the many cases of the complex ‘flow’ between subculture and mainstream culture of China. The two-dimensional narrative technique which have employed for the study has proven very useful for the analysis of the interaction ritual chains that will still be observable in the future as well. And the most important idol is the nation. This kind of ‘fandom nationalism’, however, can be dangerous. Exclusivity and closed-mindedness, which are common trends in fandom, not only affect the video content itself, but can also spread to other realms, other cyber-spaces, and even to physical spaces.
