Due to a mismatch of status between American and Filipino English varieties in Korea, study abroad in the Philippines is inherently conflicting for Korean students. To explore this phenomenon, the perceptions of and attitudes towards Filipino teachers of seven secondary Korean students participating in a two-month study abroad in the Philippines in 2020 were investigated. While the students perceived the teachers to be emotionally sensitive, they judged them to be linguistically inferior to native speakers, felt uncomfortable due to unfamiliar communication styles, and considered their pronunciation unintelligible. Moreover, students were unwilling to align with the Filipino variety of English due to its socio-cultural meritlessness. Considering the current status of English as an international language, the findings suggest the need for Korean EFL learners to be more exposed to diverse varieties of Englishes. Based on the students’ selectivity of an acceptable English variety, the discussion suggests labeling the expanding countries as “norm-consuming” and proposes the possibility of adapting models from economics and politics to English education research.
