The statue of Taejo Wang Geon was found during the expansion reconstruction of Heolleung, not from a planned excavation, and was found in the form of nude wearing only an official coronet. The statue of Taejo is a ritualistic symbol that would have been clothed but has yet been studied in the aspect of historical dress. This study will deduce the attire that would have been worn on the Taejo statue through the coronet which is the only item of dress remaining on the statue, and implement the whole attire through illustration. The official coronet on Taejo’s statue has 24 lines and geumbaksan(金博山), and is presumed to be a tongcheon-gwan. However, there are differences in the form between the tongcheon-gwan on the statue and the Chinese tongcheon-gwan during the time in which the statue was made. There are also remaining gold foil on the coronet of the statue, and therefore it can be deducted that the statue is wearing a type of tongcheon-gwan but in religious form and colors, as can be seen in Buddhist paintings. A full set of tongcheon-gwanbok, when referring to the China’s History of Song(宋史) and the painting of Song(宋) Xuanzu, would include the tongcheon-gwan, gangsa-po, hasang, pyeseul, okdae, daedae, seok, bangsimgongnyeong, and gyu. It cannot be known whether the statue was clothed with the full set but judging by the shape of the statue’s hand that would have held a gyu, it can be said that the statue was wearing a full set of tongcheon-gwanbok. This study attempts to recreate the image of the fully clothed Taejo statue based on the painting of Song Xuanzu through illustration.
