This article describes the attempts of Schopenhauer and Freud to overcome the limitations of western modern philosophy by extending the realm of rationality, which was limited to consciousness, to the body.
Schopenhauer asserts that the unconscious and the body are essences, and that consciousness is fragmentary and superficial. Freud also applies the concept of the unconscious to the realm of the thing in itself that cannot be expressed in consciousness. Freud is also trying to explain the realm of the unconscious through the method of psychoanalysis. In Freud the contrast between the ego and the id is similar to Schopenhauer’s contrast between intellect and will. Freud sees the ego as the body, just as Schopenhauer regards the intellect as an operation of the body, the brain. Freud’s argument for the formation of the superego shows that Schopenhauer’s ethic of compassion is fully explained in the realm of experience, not in the mystical dimension.
