This paper analyzes Workers Leaving the Factory by Louis and August Louis Lumière focusing on acting and its relations to labor. First of all, this paper illustrates how the first film was carefully directed to present the workers getting out through a factory gate and going home with enthusiasm. The workers are not professional actors, but real employees of the company that Lumiere brothers owned. However, they perform assigned specific roles―to be individuals separate from the labor collective of a factory, and show their own identities as non-workers. The portrayal of workers seems to idealize the life of French citizens so the French audience of the film feel a sense of connectedness. This film was made in the age of modernity, the late 19th-early 20th century, and this is one of the ‘actualities,’ which implies early documentary, portraying the various images of urban landscapes. Proven above, however, the case of Workers Leaving the Factory is directed to ‘look’ real rather than document the reality as it is. In this light, I argue Workers Leaving the Factory is considered the archetype of acting in fiction which resembles acting that was institutionalized during the classical Hollywood period. Finally, it is reminiscent of the industrial context where acting is equivalent to labor and cinema to a giant factory.
