The purpose of this study is to identify key terms and latent topics in social media posts, which mentioned “kuk-jeh-gyul-hon” (international marriage) or “da-moon-hwa” (multicultural). Our data were 7,570 web-crawled posts collected from the multiple platforms of online communities, forums, and blogs in Korea. Using topic modeling with latent Dirichlet allocation, we identified and named 24 latent topics. We then developed a conceptual diagram to better understand the structure of identified topics. Our diagram displays nine themes under three domains. The first domain included three themes, which were getting married, marital life, and divorce. The second domain, micro-level factors, highlighted family members, gender and sexuality, and economic factors. Macro-level factors, the third domain, showed that the state and society, public policies, and social norms were important in online posts related to international marriage and multiculturalism. Our results show that negative perceptions towards international marriage and multiculturalism were prevalent online, and these negative attitudes were related to the stereotypical image of international marriages involving bride purchasing. We also found that the scope of identified topics in this study covered only limited aspects of intimate partnerships and martial life. Further, our findings suggest that prejudice against multicultural families may originate from the issues of economy, gender, and sexuality, rather than racism.
