A pioneer in earth art that argued for escape from the old formalism art, Robert Smithson inspired many other contemporary architects with his architectural works. The purposes of this study were to examine his art philosophy with a focus on the concept of entropy that he advocated and compare and analyze his works and those of other contemporary architects that showed a deconstruction tendency in their architectural works in the early days, thus proposing a new view for comparative researches on architecture and art. The findings were as follows: first, it was when he converted himself from a painter to a sculptor that his works could be connected with architecture. Second, some contemporary architects created works that showed a similar tendency to his sculptures in which the same crystal structures were repeated. However, his works pursued complete disorder, whereas their architectural works contained space unlike artistic works and thus suggested the minimum directionality in order to utilize space even in chaotic space. Third, Smithson established an entropy theory of growth toward disordered chaos through the repetition of a crystal structure and chose a non-linear spiral as a figure to symbolize it, which process is similar to the process of deconstructivist architecture developing into a streamlined mass in contemporary architecture through the folding theory of nomadism. Finally, the streamlined mass of contemporary architects with a concept of folding was able to utilize the continuity of its streamlined shape to include a space in it and thus form newer three-dimensional formativeness.
