In the past, the majority of Korean Language learners were the learners of beginner’s level, whereas, recently there tends to be increasing numbers of the intermediate and advanced learners. When these intermediate and advanced learners face new vocabularies that have similar meanings after learning certain vocabularies, there are high needs from these learners to clearly distinguish and use each vocabularies, depending on their meanings. Despite these needs, the education to meet these needs has not been successfully carried out, due to lack of the empirical studies on synonyms in Korean language. Therefore, this study had first divided various emotive adjectives, which are highly productive as expressive vocabularies, into four categories: happiness, anger, sadness, and joy. Then, it had examined how Korean L1 speakers and Korean language learners differentiate each vocabulary. As a result, this study found that there were a great difference between Korean L1 speakers and the Korean language learners in distinguishing synonyms, even though the participants of this experiment were the Korean language learners of advanced proficiency level. This shows that the education which can provide typical situational contexts is needed for learners to clearly distinguish the vocabularies that are in synonymous relation.
