The purpose of this study was to examine the Korean phonographic records of silent films, produced in the days of silent films (1924-1934), namely the early days of Korean film music, and then look into the musical characteristics of songs of movie of which themes were ‘history and reality.’ For this, audio data in 󰡔the Collection of Silent Films󰡕, a reprint of Korean silent film records, were used, together with the data of newspapers, magazines and collections of songs at that timeThe total number of silent films, produced with Korean phonographic records in the days of silent films, was estimated to be 13. Among them, films of which themes were ‘history and reality’ were five, including ｢Arirang｣. As a theme song of movie, Arirang was a typical example of silent films that underwent Japanese oppression and censorship, and contained such a text as expressing a strong anti-Japanese consciousness. In addition, in the course of setting a traditional folk song to Western music of three-four time, ｢Arirang｣ reduced sigimsae and simplified melodies. Another theme song of movie, ‘Looking for Love’, did not directly reflect anti-Japanese consciousness onto the music score, but expressed it metaphorically in a close connection with film narratives. This song was a Japanese style song, consisting of yonanuki major scale with a five-scale system of ‘do, re, mi, fa and sol,’ and of binary time. And other thematic songs of movie, such as the theme song of ｢A Soldier of Fortune｣, frequently presented such lyrics as mourning for the loss of country and accusing reality, and used such methods of score marking as simultaneous writing of numerical scores which were similar to staff notation, or as writing numerical scores only.
