This essay analyzes the structure of the narrators’ desire in Melville’s novels through Rene Girard’s mimetic theory. Girard argues that all desire is meditated by desiring what the other desires. In “Bartleby”, I offer insight into the true cause of the narrator’s mimetic behavior. The narrator has the desires of late John Jacob and Cicero. He is so safe a man that he cannot expose the true color of his desire. And In “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo”, I can examine the processes of mediated desire in the narrator’s desire. According to Girard, a character desires an object not for itself, but for the value projected onto it by the desire of another. Similarly, the narrator’s desire in “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo” is from Merrymusk’s. The most important thing for the mimetic desire is a scandal because it is almost impossible to avoid. The narrator in “Bartleby” has a scandal with Bartleby and the narrator in “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo” does one with Merrymusk. The scandal with Bartleby makes the narrator in “Bartleby” safe but false. The scandal with Merrymusk leads the narrator in “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo” to a high-spirited way although he imitates Merrymusk’s desire. It suggests that Melville intended to reveal the truth of desire.
