This paper aimed at the objection and alternative interpretation to Professor Kang’s article which is titled, “Analyzing the success of Chun Doo Hwan’s Long Coup d’état”. Despite its many advantages, the limitations of his paper are as follows. First, in the early phase of the coup, he noticed the ‘collusion and cooperation between the narrow ruling elites called’ Choi Kyu Ha and Shin Hyun Hwak but more importantly, they began to operate a dierent ruling plan from the democratization program proposed by opposition parties and civil society right after 12·12. Second, as a part of their ruling plan, the idea of the process of creating the ruling bloc was the decentralized presidential system. ird, Kim Jong Pil’s inauguration is not the result of the Shin Hyun Hwak and TK forces like Kang Won Taek’s interpretation, but the reason of Kim Jong Pil’s serious disqualication he has. e limitations of his paper are basically not paying attention to the interaction between push factors and pull factors such as the incapacity of other political forces. My argument is that the more important power that determined this period was the ‘new military forces’ rather than the Choi Gyu Ha-Shin Hyun Hwak transitional regimes, and that the relationship between the two could be better explained in terms of the conspiracy rather than conict or compulsory service.
