This study explores the needs of engineering graduate students and researchers for the curriculum development of an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) program. A survey was conducted with 28 participants who are graduate students and researchers enrolled in an English workshop for engineering researchers in a university in Seoul. The survey inquired about the subjects’ current use of English, necessity for English, and preferred structure and teaching methodology of college ESP courses. The results of the needs analysis revealed that the participants placed more value on academic needs such as paper writing and discussions at conferences than on communicative purposes. The results also showed that in terms of ESP teaching methodology, the participants preferred learner-centered instruction. The findings of the study suggest a need to design effective ESP programs for graduate students in collaboration with content lecturers and language specialists. Suggestions for further research and a few pedagogical implications are provided for language educators who are interested in designing ESP instruction models.
