The present study investigated Korean learners’ perceptions of the difficulty of English academic writing, exploring possible underlying reasons. Data were collected using a mixed-method approach involving pre- and post-course questionnaires, students’ writing drafts, and in-depth individual interviews. 88 college students completed the questionnaires developed by the researchers and 12 students participated in in-depth retrospective interviews after their mid-term and final examinations. The results of questionnaire analysis suggested that before completing the task most of the participant students expected the lack of pedagogical instruction to be the main cause of writing difficulty; the contrary was found with organizing ideas logically and coherently identified as the biggest difficulty after experiencing L2 writing. The interview data analysis indicated that most participants perceived difficulties in the following four aspects: (i) lack of learning experience; (ii) lack of linguistic knowledge; (iii) organization of ideas (structuring); and (iv) appropriate lexical choice and expressions in English.
