Pupose: Drawing upon Ulrich Beck's notion of 'reflexive modernity', this study attempts an alternative interpretation of sports doping. Specifically, after pointing to the limits of pre-existing ethical discourses on the issue of doping, this paper presents a new way of understanding of the matter. To date dominant discourses on doping have revolved around ethical issues, such as fairness, athletes' health, coerciveness and social ramifications. However, there are some limitations in this body of research. Method: From the perspective of 'reflexive modernity', the problem of doping does not lie with unethical intention. Rather, the initiation of doping mostly emanates from scientific, rational decision-making, though without awareness of its side-effects. This is still the case today where the illegitimacy of doping has come to the fore, because using substances that are not on the prohibited list may still be a rational choice. Conclusion: Thus, this study suggests that we apprehend the issue of doping in terms of unexpected consequences of science.
