Guillermo de Toro’s fantasy film Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), an excellent work describing the terrible actualities after the Spanish Civil War in 1944 through a mythological configure, is characteristic of having the effect of ambiguity in the boundary between reality and fantasy. This paper aims to illuminate the aspect that fantasy is utilized as a coping mechanism against the psychological trauma thrown by miserable real life. As a research method, I observe how the dichotomized worlds of reality and fantasy harmonize with each other and what the role and limit of the fantasy as a countermeasure for unfortunate reality is. For an expected effect, this research can present an alternative that will make other fantasy films delineate sad historical facts sincerely and also mitigate the psychological trauma caused by them, which is beyond the practices usually incurred so far, where romance corresponds to fairy tales.
