This study investigates the classification criteria of 7 sub-types of the tales found in <A heavenly being wife> in『General Survey and Analysis of Japanese Folktales (Nihon Mukashibanashi Tsuukan)』. It is confirmed that the classification criteria of the tales are affected by the traditional way of classification, thus, the tales of Ryukyu area tend to be categorized as an independent sub-type. In addition, this study conducts comparative studies of Japanese <A heavenly being wife> and Korean <Woodman and a legendary woman> in order to reveal the characteristics of <A heavenly being wife> through the various motifs. In conclusion, the Korean tales are consisted of a sequence of the motifs of “a good deed,” “retribution of the animals,” “breaking a taboo,” and “the ascension into heaven,” so it has the structure whose contents are hardly changed. On the other hand, the Japanese tales have a variety of contents because “taboo” is not the essential motif for the content.
