Literature media has a great influence on the creation and distribution of literature, and even readers’ acceptance. As an alternative medium to protect the uniqueness of literature to confront the control of commercial media, coterie magazines appeared. 『Yeongnam Supil』, annually published by ‘Yeongnam Supil Literary Society’ in Daegu is an essay coterie magazine with the longest history in Korea. 『Yeongnam Supil』 with history for almost 50 years has established the foundation of local essay literary world and also worked hard to establish the literary uniqueness of essay. This paper aims to examine the influence on the history, activity, and local literary world of an essay coterie magazine 『Yeongnam Supil』. Starting from the formation of ‘Gyeongbuk Essay Coterie Society’, 『Gyeongbuk Supil』 published in 1969 was settled down as 『Yeongnam Supil』 after changing its name several times. The purpose of publishing the coterie magazine was to secure papers to publish members’ works and also to establish the essay literature as a literary genre, in stead of essay as travelog or leisurely conversation. Activities like joint work review through monthly meetings, holding literary seminars, and establishing theories of essay literature were converged into the coterie magazine 『Yeongnam Supil』. Like this, the coterie magazine 『Yeongnam Supil』 was a cluster of coteries aiming for literary essay as a precious place realizing the literary ideology. Showing sentences filled with lyricism and philosophical thinking through introspection, coteries aim for essays as literature. A coterie magazine 『Yeongnam Supil』 worked as a center of the essay literary world in Daegu/Gyeongbuk while the formation of coterie and the publication of coterie magazine influenced the formation of essay coteries in other regions. Also, sticking to the initial spirit of publication, 『Yeongnam Supil』 contributed to the establishment of essay literature and theories, and the expansion of the base for essay population. It would be necessary to pay attention to the fact that it also contributed to the development of identity and independence of local literary world focusing on the coterie magazine, and the formation of the essay literary world.
