Lee, Youn-Kyoung. (2016). Corpus-Based English Grammar Instruction in a Korean College Context. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal 24(4), 39-60. The present study aims at examining to what extent corpus and contextualized lexicogrammar are applicable and effective when used in a Korean college context. This study was conducted in a College Intermediate English Grammar Course involving 63 participants (61 EFL students and 2 Korean instructors). Data included students’ corpus search assignments, grammar exercises, Likert-scale questionnaire, and interview data from both students and instructors about their reflections on corpus-based learning and teaching. The results of the study revealed several positive effects of the approach, such as improvement of language awareness, better command of some lexicogrammatical rules and patterns, understanding of importance of context in language use, enhanced opportunity of discovery learning. The results also revealed some challenges of corpus-based grammar learning, including the difficulty students feel in corpus analysis. Based on the findings of the study, useful teaching strategies and suggestions for future corpus-based learning are also discussed.
