The purpose of this study is to investigate perceptions of college students on writing assignments and its effect on learning grammar. Seventy-five students who were enrolled in an English grammar course completed two essays in English over one semester. They also filled out a questionnaire that asked about their perceptions of the necessity of English writing assignments and effective ways of learning English grammar. The analysis of the essays shows that most of the students were able to demonstrate their grammar knowledge through writing essays. The questionnaire responses indicate three main points: (1) forty-two of the participants self-assessed their performance on writing assignments as generally satisfactory; (2) sixty-four of the respondents thought learning English grammar through writing assignments was useful to understand English grammar they learned in class; (3) sixty-five of the participants responded that writing assignments are necessary to enhance their understanding of grammar of target language. Overall, the results show that most of the participants realized the necessity of English writing assignments, suggesting that teaching English grammar should focus on productive skills as well as receptive skills to help learners achieve English competence and communicative skills.
