The key competences of the 21st century are to develop students' inquiry skills and to increase their problem solving ability. From the perspective of a history lesson in the classroom, an core effort to nurture these competences is to apply constructivist teaching and learning methods in the classrooms. It means that an opportunity are given for student to do historical inquiry with these teaching and learning methods. As the result, history lessons turned to academic inquiry community and an educational environment in which students could cultivate their historical thinking that is a key competence of the 21st century from a history educational view. The teaching and learning environment to develop students' historical thinking is characterized by plenty of learning materials and the usage of learning tools. In this case, thinking maps as a learning tool should be paid attention. Because the maps can paly an important role for students to not only understand materials but also gather evidences and then construct their own opinions. Therefore thinking maps should be placed as an essential factor in turning historical lessons in the elementary classrooms to constructivist historical lessons.
