This paper presents a comparative study of the modern poetry in Korea and Japan. Madonna was selected as an important keyword of the present survey. At that time Munch painted ‘Madonna,’ which was the center of culture. It had a great impact on the European society at the time. Its influence spread worldwide beyond the genre of art. Munch also influenced both Korean and Japanese societies as well as the literary world. I hypothesized that Munch's paintings have affected the Korean and Japanese modern poets. There are two poems which involve the poetic word ‘Madonna.’ These two poems share the same meaning with the icons of time, due to the individual cultures of Korea and Japan as well as the personal experience of the artist. It can be seen that it is shown in another aspect. Lee-Sang Hwa’s ‘Madonna’ symbolizes ambiguity. On the other hand, Yoshida Issui’s ‘Madonna’ symbolizes modernity.
