In this article, we aim at explicating the nature of Japanese discourse- final diplomatic expressions of the kondo-type. We analyze the way in which diplomatic expressions are used and interpreted, depending on the degree of intimacy between the speaker and the addressee, the role relation between a customer and a store employee, and the formality of speech setting. Diplomatic expressions of the kondo-type are most frequently used for “those with whom the speaker worked for the first time.” By contrast, they are infrequently used for “those to whom the speaker is not close.” When these expressions are used for “those who the speaker worked together in his/her workplace,” the speaker’s illocutionary act is not that of flattering. From the addressees’ perspective, he/she is “glad” particularly when diplomatic expressions are uttered by “those with whom the speaker worked for the first time.” By contrast, the addressees tend to have the sense of “I feel nothing particular” and “The expression would be merely a diplomatic one” when the addressee is a “custom.”
